In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is one of the most widely used and effective forms of fertility treatment. As part of the IVF process, mature eggs are collected from the ovaries and fertilised with sperm in a laboratory setting.
The resulting embryos are cultured for 5 to 6 days until they reach the blastocyst stage, increasing the chance of successful implantation when transferred to the womb.
Healthy embryos can either be transferred during the same IVF cycle or safely frozen for use in future IVF treatment.
IVF can be carried out using your own eggs and sperm, or with support from our egg donation and sperm donation programmes, depending on your individual circumstances.

Every IVF cycle is different and tailored to your individual needs. After initial fertility tests and a consultation with a specialist, you'll receive a personalised IVF treatment plan. A typical cycle follows the steps below and can take between 4 to 6 weeks.
You start with a referral or self-referral, a fertility assessment and a consultation to agree your plan, then a consent appointment and access to counselling. (Folded in from the retired typical-journey page.)
The stimulation protocol is guided by your AMH level, and generally involves a 7 to 14-day course of hormone injections to stimulate the ovaries to produce several good-sized follicles.
Pelvic scans check the development and growth of the follicles, which determines when the eggs are collected.
Once the follicles have reached the right size, an injection matures the eggs for collection. A needle is then gently guided through the vaginal wall to collect the eggs one by one. You will be sedated for this part, to ensure no pain or discomfort.
Healthy eggs are combined with sperm in the lab. A method called intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), where a single sperm is injected into each mature egg, may be used for low sperm count or quality.
Fertilised eggs develop for five to six days into mature embryos, monitored with an EmbryoScope to help select the strongest for transfer. Any additional healthy embryos can be frozen for future use.

A typical IVF cycle takes around four to six weeks, with about two weeks of more intensive treatment. Timing varies with your plan and how your body responds.
